About

The University of Idaho, College of Engineering is committed to developing a long-term program designed to prepare students to lead the way in meeting Grand Challenges identified by the National Academy of Engineering.  These challenges are key to sustainably improving health, security and quality of life across the globe.   Students in the Grand Challenge Scholars Program at the University of Idaho commit to developing the following five core competencies or skills.

1. Hands on research experience
2. Multi-disciplinary learning and understanding
3. Multi-cultural and global awareness
4. Entrepreneurship and innovation
5. Development of social consciousness

To acquire these competencies each Grand Challenge Scholar develops an individualized plan. Each students’ unique plan details activities, experiences and classes the student may take to attain each competency. This approach places students in the lead while providing guidance from faculty mentors and in some cases, advisors from corporate partners. The overarching goal of the program is for students to understand the purpose of these five components, gain significant expertise in the Grand Challenges, and to develop themselves as a leader.
