The Grand Challenges Scholars Program (GCSP) at the University of Portland is firmly grounded in the mission of the University which is to “prepare people who respond to the needs of the world and its human family.” This program requires that students complete five components designed to prepare them to successfully contribute solutions to the fourteen Grand Challenges. We have developed a program that draws upon the many strengths of the University, these include: 1) a strong liberal arts core curriculum required of all University of Portland students, enabling them to view complex issues from multiple lenses, 2) a nationally recognized program in entrepreneurship that allows students to assess economic sustainability, 3) a robust study abroad program that provides an international and multi-cultural context, 4) a dedicated center for coordinating service to local and global communities, and 5) a comprehensive senior capstone and undergraduate research program to provide a creative learning experience.
